Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to contest certain rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
