‘He returned from the brink’: Chevy Chase was in eight days in a medically induced coma during the pandemic.

Chevy Chase suffered a “near fatal” cardiac event that resulted in him being put into an medically induced coma during the pandemic, per details from a new documentary project about the comedy star.

Featured in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the legend of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars twice, spent a total of five full weeks in the hospital.

“There was a problem, and he was unable to describe to me what was wrong. So, we went to the ER. His heart stopped. During those years he was drinking, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they are unable to pump as much blood out with each beat.”

Physicians subsequently induced him into a coma for eight days, before warning his child, his daughter: “His return is uncertain. We are unsure how aware he’ll be. Get ready for the worst.”

“When he woke up, all he could do was use his voice,” she added. “He has essentially come back from the dead.”

The actor personally has stated that he has dealt with cognitive issues since his medical ordeal, and in the film he fails to recall some of his past professional and personal disputes, including a fistfight with Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live green room.

The comedian noted he was “hurt” by his absence from the 50th anniversary special of SNL earlier this year, at which he was in the audience but not participating.

“Honestly, it was quite upsetting,” he said. “I'm only now voicing this. But I assumed that I would’ve been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett Morris and Laraine took the stage, I was curious as to why I wasn't. There was no invitation. Why was I excluded?”

Now 82, Chase, came close to death in 1980 when he was subjected to an electrical shock on the set of Modern Problems, an incident which triggered a period of severe depression.
